Our Story
Classically British & Co. was originally founded in 2003 as part of the Mark Elie Dance Foundation. Today, the company operates as an independent CIC dedicated to providing pathways for Black and mixed-heritage dancers through education, performance and community engagement. Our mission is to transform and diversify the dance landscape in Britain.

In celebration of Black History Month and Season, the company will host an annual event carefully curated to highlight and platform Black and mixed-heritage dancers, showcasing a dynamic range of classical and contemporary performances.

We also champion education through talks and presentations on the history of Black classical dance. This initiative aims to inspire and empower young, diverse talent, fostering creativity and equal opportunities for all.

Our Founder
Lifetime Achievement Award winner Mark Elie is founder and Artistic Director of Classically British & Co., a former professional dancer and an author.
Mark grew up in a Westminster children's home before discovering a passion for dance and graduating from Rambert. He enjoyed a stellar international career with leading companies, including Ballet Gulbenkian, Dance Theatre of Harlem, as well as starring in numerous West End shows.

Mark later founded the Mark Elie Dance Foundation and Portobello Dance School to offer affordable dance tuition to low-income families, ultimately leading to the creation of Classically British & Co. two decades ago. His vision, to address the lack of diversity in British classical ballet, creating opportunities for Black and mixed-heritage dancers in British dance.
